COAL COUNTY WAS HARD HIT BY THE DEPRESSION AND UNEMPLOYMENT WAS RAMPANT; WPA PROJECTS SUCH AS THIS WERE AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE ECONOMY OF THE AREA IN THE 1930S.
